Artist Statement
My ceramic sculptures feature slab-built geometric forms and are inspired by my background in graphic design and interest in modern architecture. A limited palette of three different clays, one of which is sourced from my Sydney garden, remain unglazed, highlighting the simplicity and minimal aesthetic of each form. I use iron rich clay from my garden primarily as a slip and apply it over another clay body. The result is a deep tan colour when fired.
My sculptures can be viewed as stand-alone individual pieces or when multiple elements are arranged, an interplay between the open and closed forms and negative spaces occur, presenting a different dynamic with each iteration.
Water reflections inspire my recent body of work. I am fascinated by the shifting shapes that fragmented reflections produce on water, made unique by the very nature of their transience. Using clay, I seek to preserve their fleeting presence in tangible, curved forms. I find the process deeply satisfying, as these works become quiet reminders of my contemplative reverie spent simply watching water move.
